Puppy-proof the home

To a puppy, your home is a new playground to sniff, explore, and make mischief. A few thoughtful changes protect both your puppy and your belongings.

These home-safety reminders are adapted from AKC guidance and are a practical checklist to work through before pickup day.

Unplug electrical cords, move them out of reach, or use cord concealers. Chewing cords can cause mouth burns or electrical shock.
Skip table food. Many human foods are unsafe for dogs; take special care with sugarless gum, chocolate, raisins, and other toxic foods.
Store cleaning supplies high up or behind childproof latches. Keep your puppy away while products are in use and fumes are present.
Put away all medications, including bottles and dispensers on low tables, bathroom counters, and nightstands.
Keep toilet lids closed so your puppy cannot drink from or fall into the toilet.
Keep doors and windows closed, and secure blind cords so they cannot become tangled around your puppy’s neck.
Put away small choking hazards such as coins, paper clips, rubber bands, and jewelry.
Keep sharp objects—including knives, scissors, razors, and tools—out of reach.
Secure trash cans. Garbage can upset a puppy’s stomach or contain poisonous foods.
Move poisonous houseplants where your puppy cannot chew them.
