A clear introduction to Goldendoodle lineage labels, what they can tell you, and the questions that matter most when choosing a puppy.
F-labels describe a puppy’s family tree. They are helpful shorthand—but they do not guarantee coat, shedding, size, temperament, or allergy compatibility.
First generation
F1
A Golden Retriever crossed with a Poodle. This is the first filial generation, commonly described as an even mix of the two founding breeds.
Backcross
F1B
An F1 Goldendoodle crossed back to one founding breed—often a Poodle, though the label alone does not specify which. Ask about the actual parentage.
Second generation
F2
Two Goldendoodles crossed together. This is the second filial generation.
Later generations
Multigen
After the early F1, F1B, and F2 labels, “multigenerational” is usually the clearest and most useful description.
What about F1BB & F1BBB?
More letters do not
mean more certainty.
You may see labels such as F1BB or F1BBB used to describe additional backcrossing. These labels are not consistently standardized across breeders, particularly after the first few generations.
Rather than relying on a longer label alone, ask about the parents, their genetic testing, expected coat texture and furnishings, shedding expectations, health screening, and the individual puppy’s temperament.
The better questions

letters.
Coat & shedding
Coat texture and shedding are influenced by specific genes. GANA notes that genetic traits are a more reliable indicator than generation label alone.
Allergies
No generation can promise an allergy-safe dog. Dander, saliva, proteins, and individual sensitivity all matter; spend time with dogs when allergies are a concern.
Health testing
Ask which health and genetic tests were completed for both parents and how the pairing was selected. Responsible decisions are more important than a label.
Temperament & fit
Every puppy is an individual. A thoughtful conversation about your home, routine, and the particular litter helps identify the best match.
