Puppy guide
Breeder or
shelter?
We wholeheartedly support rescue. Here is an honest look at why some families choose a responsible breeder instead—and how to tell the difference.
Both paths can lead to a wonderful, lifelong companion. The right choice depends on what your family needs, and what you know about the dog before you bring them home.
Shelters & rescues
Rescue
Rescue saves lives. Shelters and rescues are a beautiful choice for families who want to give a dog a second chance, are open to a dog of any age, size, or mix, and are comfortable with some unknowns. We support it wholeheartedly.
Responsible breeders
Breeder
A responsible breeder plans each litter on purpose. Families who have specific needs—a certain size, coat, energy level, or an allergy-conscious home—or who want to know a puppy’s full story from day one, often choose to wait for a carefully bred puppy.
The heart of it
Knowing what
you are bringing home.
The biggest difference is information. A dog’s parents, early weeks, and health shape the next ten to fifteen years of your life together, and with a responsible breeder, all of that is known and open to your questions.
That does not make a bred puppy better than a rescued dog. It makes the outcome more predictable, which matters a great deal to some families and less to others. Neither choice comes with a guarantee of a perfect dog, only a different set of knowns and unknowns.
Reasons families choose a breeder
What a responsible
breeder offers.
History & background
You can meet the parents, see their photos, and read about the litters that came before. A puppy’s lineage is known, not guessed, and you can follow that family tree back.
Health testing
Our dams and sires are genetically tested, and we avoid pairing two carriers of the same inherited condition. That reduces, though it cannot erase, the risk of hereditary disease.
Temperament
Temperament is partly inherited and partly shaped by early life. Choosing parents with sweet, steady dispositions, then raising their puppies in a home with children and other animals, gives a head start on a family-friendly dog.
Size, coat & type
With a mixed-breed dog of unknown parentage, adult size and coat are a guess. With planned breeding you can know the expected size, coat, shedding, and color range—especially helpful for allergy-conscious homes.
Early socialization
From just a few days old, our puppies experience gentle handling, new sounds, and early crate and potty foundations. These first weeks are a critical window that you cannot get back.
A guarantee & lifetime support
Every puppy goes home vet checked and microchipped with a two-year health guarantee, a seven-day well-puppy warranty, and a breeder who answers your questions for life.
The right match
Through an application and conversation, we get to know your home, then match you with the puppy whose energy and personality fit your family, not simply whichever puppy is first.
Planning & timing
Puppies are available on a known schedule through a waitlist, so you can prepare your home, your calendar, and your budget before your new family member arrives.
Not all breeders are equal
How to spot a
responsible breeder.
“Breeder” covers everyone from devoted hobbyists to high-volume operations that put profit ahead of the dogs. Before choosing any breeder, ours included, look for these signs:
- They health test both parents and will show you the results.
- You can meet the puppies’ mother and see where the puppies are raised.
- They limit how often a dam is bred and how many litters they have each year.
- They ask you questions too, through an application and interview.
- They put guarantees and expectations in a written contract.
- They stay available after the puppy goes home, for questions, guidance, and support.
Be cautious of pet stores, online sellers who ship a puppy without ever speaking with you, and anyone who cannot or will not answer questions about the parents.
