Come when called

A joyful recall is a safety skill. Teach your puppy that turning toward you is always worth it.

Before you begin

Set up for success.

Step by step

Say your chosen cue once in a cheerful voice, take a step back, and reward generously when your puppy comes to you.

Treat, praise, or play every time your puppy reaches you—even if you did not call. Avoid scolding after they come, even when they were slow.

Practice in gradually busier places while your puppy is on leash or a long line. Increase difficulty only when they are succeeding.

Often reward the recall and then let your puppy return to sniff or play. This keeps the cue from predicting that fun always ends.

Keep in mind

Even a well-trained dog can be startled or distracted. Use a leash outside unsecured areas and follow local rules.
