Loose-leash walking

Teach your puppy that staying near you on a relaxed leash leads to good things—without pulling or pressure.

Before you begin

Set up for success.

Step by step

Let your puppy become comfortable wearing their harness and having the leash attached indoors. Reward calm attention and check-ins.

Take a few steps. Mark and reward while the leash is loose and your puppy stays nearby. Short sessions are plenty at first.

When your puppy reaches the end of the leash, stop moving. Reward when they return or offer attention, then continue together.

After a few successful loose-leash steps, release your puppy to sniff. Exploration is valuable enrichment and reinforces good walking.
