Crate training
A crate can become a calm, familiar resting place when your puppy is introduced to it gradually and positively.

Before you begin
Set up for success.
- A correctly sized crate with a comfortable mat
- Small, puppy-safe treats or part of a meal
- A quiet space where your family spends time
Step by step
Make it inviting
Leave the door open. Place a treat or a meal just inside and allow your puppy to choose to enter. Never push or pull them in.
Build happy repetitions
Reward calm choices in and around the crate. Keep early sessions short and finish while your puppy is still comfortable.
Practice the door gently
Once your puppy is relaxed inside, close the door briefly while you stay nearby. Open it before they become worried, then gradually increase time.
Use it for rest, not punishment
Keep the crate associated with sleep, quiet time, and good things. Puppies still need frequent breaks, companionship, and age-appropriate potty opportunities.
Keep in mind
If your puppy is distressed, slow down. A crate should feel like a safe place, not isolation or discipline.
